Essentials Every Woman’s closet needs; while trends come and go, wardrobe essentials are the foundation of every outfit. Every essential piece in a women’s closet should be versatile and serve many purposes in your closet. It is a “go-to” piece that completes multiple outfits.
I live in a suburb of Sacramento, CA, and work for a local software company. Our dress code is casual; wearing a business suit would look out of place in our office. However, pairing a black pencil skirt with a denim jacket tones down the corporate look and fits the casual style of my office. A denim jack is essential for every woman’s closet.
Factors like lifestyle and career may change what essential items each woman needs in her closet.
If you work in a banking, legal, or other professional position, the dress code will likely be traditional business attire; stick with classics and minimize and incorporate trends thoughtfully. Essentials

You will usually find me in a pair of jeans, but a quality pair of black slacks should be a staple in every women’s closet. I prefer pants without belt loops and like the clean straight line of a pencil or cigarette pants.

Denim jacket
The denim jacket is essential and is always in fashion. Denim jackets go with everything, from evening wear to casual business wear. They are versatile; pair them with a pull-over sweater for the winter or over a summer blouse or tank top.
White button-up
You can’t go wrong with a classic collared button-up white blouse. Tuck it in, tie it up or wear it as an outer-lay over a tank top. Dressed up or down, it goes with everything and is one of those pieces you go to when you are short on time and need to throw an outfit together in a hurry.

Black Blazer
A classic blazer has been a staple in my closet for many years. The style has morphed throughout the years but never goes out of fashion. Pair it with denim jeans or skirts for a casual look or tailored slacks, or a pencil skirt for a professional look. Blazers look great over tees, turtlenecks, and blouses.
Tanks & Tees
I live in tanks and tees all year long. They are seasonless and the perfect layering piece for sweaters, jackets, and sheer blouses. I stock my closet with both short and long-sleeved styles, and in addition to neutrals like white, black, and Navy, I include a few colorful bright tees for summer. I add a sweater or jacket and a colorful scarf over the tee to finish the look.
Outerwear
There’s nothing cozier than a soft, warm sweater on a cold winter day or light, a breezy sweater for summer. I run cold most of the time, a sweater or jacket is a must for me when I’m in the office. I love the long, straight lines of tunic-length sweaters. They look great with leggings. I am particularly fond of Halogen sweaters, and you can find both regular and petite sizes at Nordstrom.
Denim
As I stated earlier in this blog, denim is essential in my wardrobe. It takes time to find the right style and fit; shopping for jeans can be a real pain in the behind!
Banana Republic
I am a fan of both The Loft and the Banana Republic for well-fitting, quality denim. The Moden Skinny Jean by The Loft in both Regular and Petite and size. A pair of “unstressed” denim in a skinny or straight leg style should be a staple in every woman’s wardrobe.
Footwear
When it comes to sneakers, there are a lot of options available. I like cute sneaks, but they have to be comfortable and durable. For summer, a classic white sneak is perfect. I long ago opted to spend more and get a quality leather version. They are much easier to maintain and won’t need to be replaced as often. You can find brands such as Echo, Cole Hahn, Keds at a significant discount at Nordstrom Rack. They usually have a good selection of sizes, and even my size five is plentiful.
I love my Clarks black leather booties. They are comfortable to wear all day long and keep my feet toasty warm on cold winter days.
