Every woman has the potential for fabulous style. However, many women struggle with body image issues and lack confidence in their personal style. These challenges are compounded by common fashion mistakes that can make any woman feel less than fabulous. Tapping into my experience as a fitting room stylist, I have identified six common fashion bloopers in the post “Six Fashion Blunders Women of All Ages Make.”

1) Wearing Tops and Shirts Untucked

The number one fashion blunder women age 55 make (drum roll) is wearing tops and shirts untucked! In women over the age of 55, wearing tops out is synonymous with I don’t like my mid-section! However, loose, baggy, or boxy tops have the opposite effect and will make you appear larger.

Either wear fitted tops that can be tucked or partially tucked, or counterbalance your blouse over a skinny leg! Instead, wear your blouses over a skinny or slim leg and counterbalance the volume on top!

2) Not Using Proportional Dressing

Another common fashion blunder women of all ages make is not paying attention to proportions. Wearing a top that’s too long with a skirt that’s too short or vice versa can throw off your whole look. And many times, I see outfits in 1:1 proportions, which often creates a boxy shape and look!

Good style is an illusion that you create with proportional dressing. If you want your legs to appear longer, wear high-rise pants, skirts, or dresses! Alternatively, flip the ratios to 2/3 on top and 1/3 on the bottom to counterbalance your longer legs.

3) Wearing the Wrong Size

One of the things I see most is women wearing clothes that don’t fit properly. Whether it’s a shirt that’s too tight or pants that are too loose, ill-fitting clothes can make you look frumpy and unpolished.

Skip fashion blunder #3 with these tips:

  • Assuming your size is the same for all clothes is important because not all styles are the same.
  • Not utilizing the 360 mirrors in the fitting room to check out the fit from all angles. You don’t have eyes in the back of your head, so the only way is the mirror. It’s essential to check the fit from the back and front views or ask your fitting room stylist to check the fit for you.
  • Refusing to go up in size just because of the number!
  • Check the shoulder fit of shirts and tops with in-set sleeves. The seam should not slide off your shoulder unless it is a Dolman sleeve.
  • Not asking for fit and sizing help in the fitting room.

4) Too Much Dark or Neutral Colored Clothing

Many women shy away from bold colors and patterns, opting for safe neutrals instead. While neutrals are great, adding a pop of color or a fun print can add personality and interest to your outfit.

Experimenting with different colors and patterns can be intimidating, but it’s important to remember that fashion is a form of self-expression. You don’t have to go all out with a head-to-toe bright orange outfit, but starting small with a colorful scarf or a patterned blouse can do wonders for your confidence and style.

One tip is to start with complementary colors – if you’re unsure which colors work well together, a quick Google search can give you some ideas. Another is to mix and match patterns – make sure they are in the same color family or have a common element to tie them together.

5) Wearing the Wrong Underwear

There is no better way to ruin a fabulous outfit than wearing the wrong bra or panties! Fashion blunder #5 is a “no-brainer”! You have great shoulders and are baring all with a halter style dress or top, but your bra straps are showing. Choosing the proper undergarments that fit well and complement your outfit is essential. Opt for a strapless or convertible bra for halter-style tops or dresses to avoid unsightly bra straps peeking out. Seamless panties or thongs can avoid visible panty lines for fitted dresses or skirts. Remember, the proper undergarments can make all the difference in looking polished and put together.

6) Not Highlighting Your Best Features

Finally, many women forget to dress for their body shape and don’t consider their body proportions while shopping for clothes. Understanding your body type and the most flattering proportions is key to avoiding fashion blunder #6.

Confidence shows in your Style
Highlight your Best Features

Great style starts with understanding and dressing in styles that flatter your shape and bring attention to your best features. And while neutrals are great as essential or capsule pieces, adding color in a contrasting hue adds interest to a possibly dull outfit! Investing in the right underwear, you don’t want unsightly bra straps eclipsing your beautiful shoulders! And lastly, wearing clothes that fit correctly is far more flattering than squeezing into a size that is too small. And baggy clothes can also obscure your figure, so it’s essential to find the right balance between comfort and style.

Remember that fashion is ultimately about feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles and trends to find what works best for you. Whether you prefer classic pieces or trendy styles, the key is to wear what makes you feel good and accentuates your unique beauty. So go ahead and try something new today, and rock your amazing style with confidence!
